Oles Honchar is a Ukrainian writer, literary critic, public figure, laureate of the Shevchenko Prize and holder of the title of Hero of Ukraine. The writer's works were included in the "golden fund" of Ukrainian classical literature, and the novel "The Cathedral" became a landmark in the author's work and brought him world fame. But this was preceded by sharp criticism from leading figures and a campaign against the publication and distribution of the novel.
The events of the novel take place in the middle of the 20th century in the village of Zachiplyanka. The heart of Zachiplyanka is an ancient cathedral that was built by the Zaporozhian Cossacks and has since been a silent witness to the change of eras and rulers. The cathedral was turned into a warehouse of weapons, a storage for feed... Once majestic, but now tattered and faded, it awaits a new fate. Local grief leaders want to demolish the cathedral and build a "cafe for working people" in its place. Mykola, a student, and Yelka, a girl, stand in the defense of the cathedral, in whose hearts true feelings and sincere dreams still live...
